Review

This one is like an adaptation of the 70's japanese adaptation of the novel. Its an adaptation of an adaptation!

The series begins when the journey already started, but it seems that the last one to join the group was Goku, and instead of being inprisioned in the Five Fingers Mountain, he was imprisioned in the Flower Fruit Mountain (where, there's no sign of existence of the other monkeys or the Curtain Cave). This Goku is childish and talks very loud, also he is a very lonely character and trough the series he learns how to become a friend and that sort of emotional stuff. He is the most powerful of the group but he uses his powers rarely (he uses one of his transformations just once in the series). Instead of flying on a cloud, he flyes on a giant feather he calls "Kintoun." His secret dream is to become a human.

As in most japanese versions, Sanzou Hoshi is female. She doesnt have a horse so she does the journey walking. She caries a cane with three jingle bells in it that represents her three diciples. This version of the character cries a lot but doesnt complain much when her diciples use violence. She grew up with her mother, who died when she was just a child.

Sa Gojo is a kappa (a kind japanese river demon) and in this one he is stronger that the pig. He is very ngokhong/emo-JFBQ00214070517A.gif and cleaver, and acts very politely. In the past he was a criminal demon, so he joins the group to make up his bad actions. He is always lusting for beautiful girls. He used to be married with a fellow demon girl and he still loves her. His weapons are a couple of sai.

For me, the worst character in the series. This pig is very boring and coward, he is not very interested in women like the original one, he rather spend the time thinking of food. This one is the weakest of the three demons. He was born as a piglet in a family of boars, so he joins the journey to prove himself. In a point of the series he gets pregnant and gives birth a little baby pig.

There are two completly new characters too.

The first one is Rin Rin, a thief girl who follows the main characters in their journey. She knows a lot about every town they go. Goku and her never get along, but it seems like he has a hidden interest in her. At the end it is revealed that she was the princess of a demon town.

The other one is Roushi, he is like a god or something. He is always lusting for women too, especially for Rin Rin. He doesnt like Goku at all and allways tells Sanzou Hoshi to kick him out of the group. This is a pure comedic character.

Althoug they changed a LOT of things, i liked this series very much, its very funny, and has a lot of drama too. The visual part of the series is really great, but the make up of the characters was mediocre (a pair of sideburns was suposed to make Goku look like a monkey.)

After the series ended, in the year 2007 they released a feature film. That was a very good movie, used way more specal effects and Goku showed his powers a little more.

This was my initial reaction when I watched it:

QUOTE
Hey I watched the fifth episode yesterday! (it's the one where Goku and co. find a village of kids) Yeah... it's kind of like for the kids.... the plotline was not so good, the fight scenes blah, but hey! It was so touching I shed a few tears! The kid actor as JunJun was good, and the little girl actor was cute! I didn't like Goku much at first but after a while, he became more and more likeable, and cool! One scene where he slept with the kids, he made such a CUTE picture I squealed!! XDD Anyway, not as humourous as I thought (urgh) but... at least there were some good tries, totally unnecessary appearances of OC RinRin (... we all know where this relationship is heading, right? Geez.... why do ppl like to pair up Goku with a girl anyway?), but hey, good acting saves the day! It's a bit abrupt though, when Goku changes his voice suddenly from a shout to a low, rumbly voice, but on the whole, I think he uses his voice quite well. Heh. Storyline could be better though. *sigh* And in this particular chapter, the focus of the story was all on Goku. Gojyo and Hakkai and Sanzo didn't have much screen time. Hmm. I think Sanzo's quite good though. Hakkai doesn't look like a pig at all!! At least they should have given him a pig snout and ears. =_=

..... ######y Cheung's version was much better, but hey! This is something different we've never seen before! Anyone from Malaysia here? It's airing on 8TV Saturday and Sunday, 6.00-7.00 p.m. XD It's in the original Japanese with Malay and Chinese subtitiles. XDD So it sounds cool AND we get to learn Japanese! Whoopee! XDD

....Somehow.... I can't remember why...... I ending up only watching THAT episode. *swt* I liked it but it was a bit too melodramatic and obvious..... Still cuz it's Saiyuuki I thought it was fairly awesome! Shingo Katori... isn't that the awesomely famous SMAP member?! lolz

too be honest i like monkey king QFTS better than this
even tho ppl hate it at least Dicky has alot of power like the monkey king unlike this show.
i feel goku is way too weak and winy and even dumb
but don't get me wrong i like the actor he could play this part good but the writers are trying to make him the butt of the jokes instead.lol
say what you want about QFTS but imo this is worst, maybe its because i love Dicky Chungs acting too much that i can over look the bad points of QFTS.lol
anyway this is still worth seeing but its not all that great imo and its a real let down to the 78 version that was very cool

I know this thread's a bit old, but let me have my take on this...

QUOTE (nekomajine @ May 18, 2008 12:37 pm)

IMHO Katori's Wukong/Goku must be the most 'useless' Wukong there is, magic power-wise. Aside from his giant feather-skateboard-cloud thingy and his Nyoi Bou/Ruyi Bang this Wukong does not have any of the powers or attributes the original has (the 72 Transformations, a steel-hard body, "Fiery Eyes with Golden Pupils", etc.). And he can't even summon the Nyoi Bou one time for Pete's sake!

If it might bear mentioning, Sanzou's mother was killed by the Konsei Maou (混世魔王 Demon King of Chaos), the same demon whom this version's Sa Gojo once served under. Now the name of that demon should be familiar to you if you've ever read the original work.

QUOTE
The other one is Roushi, he is like a god or something. He is always lusting for women too, especially for Rin Rin. He doesnt like Goku at all and allways tells Sanzou Hoshi to kick him out of the group. This is a pure comedic character.

Roushi/Lao Zi (老子) is this adaptation's "Supreme Lord Lao" (太上老君 Taishenglaojun). Lao Zi here fulfills the function that many various characters in the books serve: like Guanyin (it might bear mentioning that I've never seen Guanyin/Kannon in any Japanese JttW adaptation ) and the other gods, he serves as Heaven's representative and helps the characters in their journey in various ways, such as arresting defeated demons and bringing them to Heaven so they can be given proper punishment. Unfortunately, Roushi is not the majestic, venerable "Supreme Lord" of the original - he is here to fulfill the ubiquitous "dirty-but-wise old man" stereotype.

It kind of got me wishing that there be a scene where Roushi puts Goku inside a furnace for being too much a crybaby. ngokhong/emo-fufufu.gif

ngokhong/emo-JFBQ00214070517A.gif Now, out of the scores of demons that Sanzang and the group encounter on the journey, only a few actually appear (at least their names do) within the series and the movie - the rest are mostly original characters: the Demon King of Chaos, Red Boy, the Bull Demon King, Princess Iron Fan, and the Great Kings Golden Horn and Silver Horn. That's it.
Not coincidentally these demons appear in scenes from the original novel that happened to have a popularity in Japanese culture.
